Table Clinics and Annual Research Days


Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry

Table Clinic Day is scheduled each year at the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. This day is set aside for students to participate in clinic games against each other. All students participating presented their research and explained their projects to the other students. This years first place winner of the SCADA competition was Margaretta Watkins. Margaretta will present her winning clinic at the ADA Annual Session in San Francisco.

Howard University College of Dentistry

The Annual Table Clinic Program of the Howard University College of Dentistry was held during the 2007 Nation’s Capital Dental meeting of the District of Columbia Dental Society, Washington, DC, in April 2007.
Sophomore, Junior and Senior dental students collaborated on the presentation of their table clinics. Four distinguished judges evaluated their clinics with the following results:


Junior student Ms. Suffiayah Webb won first place for her table clinic entitle, “The Effects of Salvianolic Acid B as a Chemotherapeutic Agent in Head and Neck Cancer.”

Mr. Alie Riaaz won second place for his table clinic entitled, “The Concordance of S. Mutans Colonization among 10 Mother–infant Pairs.”

Ms. Suffiayh Webb will represent Howard University, College of Dentistry at the ADA/Dentsply Student Clinician Research Competition in San Francisco, CA in September, 2007.


Additionally, the winners participated in the Student Clinician Competition at the NDA Annual Meeting in July 2007 and will participate at the Greater New York Dental Meeting in November 2007.

University of Michigan

The University of Michigan hosted it’s Annual Research Day on Tuesday, February 13, 2007. Esther Lee was the grand prize winner for her presentation entitled “Transfers from Enterococcus Faecalis to Streptococcus Gordonii in Teeth.” Esther’s mentor was Dr. Christine Sedgley.

University of Nebraska

Sixteen graduate dental and dental hygiene students received a total of $1,400 in cash awards for their table top presentations at the 21st Annual Professional’s Day, 40th Annual Student Scientific Program at the UNMC College of Dentistry in April 2007. Third-year dental student, Clair Stroede, was selected to represent the college at the annual American Dental Association meeting in San Francisco in September 2007. Stroede, who presented research on the effects of cement viscosity on seating force and seating time for a maxillary anterior veneer, received first place in the scientific program and a $200 cash award. “I was truly honored to be chosen as Nebraska’s student research representative. I have never been to the West coast, so this will be a real treat for me. I’d like to thank our administration and sponsors for supporting student research programs,” Stroede said.


The cash awards were made possible through contributions from the Nebraska Dental Hygienists Association, International College of Dentists, Lincoln District Dental Association, Nebraska Dental Association, P & G Professional Oral Health-Crest-Oral-B, Premier Dental Products Company and DENTSPLY International.

The New Jersey Dental School

The New Jersey Dental School “Dr. Michael Balbo Exposition Day” was held in March 2007. On Exposition Day, faculty and student present original scientific research, table clinics and presentations to the University community. Radha S. Yamarthy took first place honors at the Expo 2007 and will represent UMDNJ at the 2007 ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research program in San Francisco, California.


Radha is a first year student with an anticipated DMD degree on 2010. She received her Bachelors of Science from New Jersey Institute of Technology with a 3.77 GPA in May of 2007. Ms. Yamarthy has received many honors including National Dean’s List, Inducted into Tau Beta Pi, National Engineering Honors Society and induction into the Biomedical Engineering Honors Society.

New York University

Twenty-two students from NYU College of Dentistry (NYUCD) and its College of Nursing (NYUCN) chosen from 97 participants, were honored in April 2007 at Research Day 2007.


A record number of students submitted abstracts and presented posters for the 2007 Annual Research Day. Awards were given in 8 categories as well as PG Resident awards in each discipline. Michael Weiner captured the first place ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research award with his poster titled ”PDL Stem Cells with EMD for Mineralized Tissue Regeneration.”


The students shared the spotlight with Steven Offenbacher, DDS, PhD, MMSc, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for Oral and Systemic Diseases, School of Dentistry, University of North Carolina. Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Louis Terracio presided at the ceremony and presented the fifth annual NYUCD Distinguished Scientists Award to Dr. Offenbacher.

Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine

Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine held a joint Table Clinic Program and Research Activity Day in April 2007. The day offered a presentation by guest speaker, Dr. Anthony M. Lacopino, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, Professor, General Dental Sciences, Marquette University School of Dentistry and Director, Wisconsin Geriatric Education Center. Fourteen table clinics were presented. Dental student Anushka Refai, was the overall winner with her clinic entitled, “Proliferation of Cell Types in Rat Incisors in Response to Injury.”


Ms. Refai will represent the school at the annual ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Program, and present her table clinic at the Illinois State Dental Society and Chicago Dental Society meetings.
Winners in other categories were Jaclyn Ackman, Shelby Applegate, Henry Cho, Michael Rozny and Steve Workman.

University of Tennessee College of Dentistry

The UT College of Dentistry held the 2007 Student Research Day and Table Clinic Competition in February 2007 at the Student Alumni Center on the UT Health Science Center campus in Memphis, TN. The featured speaker was Dr. Harold C. Slavkin, Dean of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and former Director of the National Institute of Dental and craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Dr. Slavkin is an authority of the genetics and molecular biology of craniofacial development, an outstanding speaker, and an advocate for student participation in research. He gave a stirring address on the technologic and demographic changes that are transforming the future of research, education and patient care.


Fifty-three students presented results of their studies in 16 posters and 15 table clinics. Jason Blair was selected as the winner of the Student Clinician Research Award for the most outstanding presentation of clinical research. His project, “Retentive Strengths of Stainless Steel Crowns Cemented with Four Different Luting Agents,” compared materials used in dental practice. Jason is a second year dental student. He worked on his project during the summer with the support of a grant from the UT College of Dentistry Alumni Endowment For Research. He was assisted in his project by Drs. Donaldson and deRijk. Jason’s project was also the winner of an award from the Memphis Chapter of the American Association for Dental Research (AARD) and was presented at the Hinman Student Research Symposium in Memphis and the American Association for Dental Research meeting in New Orleans.


Jason will represent UT at the student poster competition of the American Dental Association Annual Session in San Francisco, California. His award was sponsored by DENTSPLY International and presented by Leann Keefer on behalf of DENTSPLY and by Dean Russell O. Gilpatrick and Dr. Mustafa Dabbous, Associate Dean for Research, representing the UT College of Dentistry.


Also receiving awards for their outstanding presentations of 2006 summer research projects were Jason Ross, winner of the Harold Cloogman Award and a travel grant from AADR and NIDCR, along with Scott Cureton, Curtis J. Homes, James Heck III, and Scott Weiskopf, winners of awards from the Memphis Chapter of the AADR.
