University at Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine
The University at Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine held its Annual Student Research Day on March 8, 2007. A poster presentation session kicked off the event in which 46 students submitted their abstracts and presented their research to fellow students and faculty. Alexander N. Campagna was chosen as the school’s representative at the ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Program to be held in San Francisco. The title of the second year dental student’s presentation is “Proteomic Analysis of MUC7-12-mer Induced Protein Expression Changes in Streptoccus Mutans.”
Following the poster presentation session, Dr. John Rugh, Professor and Chair, Department of Orthodontics, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, was the distinguished guest speaker presenting his lecture “Integrating Science into Dental Education.”

The University of Colorado School of Dentistry
The University of Colorado School of Dentistry held its 23rd Annual Research Day on February 21, 2007. The featured speakers were two of the most recently hired faculty members: Dr. David Clouthier and Dr. Raymond Yukna. Nineteen graduate and dental students presented their research activities in a poster session that was used to select the upcoming DENTSPLY representative. First year dental student Madeline Saunders won first place in the contest for her poster entitled “The role of prdm1 and hand2 in Craniofacial Development.” Dr. David Clouthier and Dr. Kristin Artinger mentored Madeline’s research studying the molecular mechanisms governing zebrafish craniofacial development. Omid Mehdipour placed second in the competition and won a separate travel award for his biomaterials research under the mentorship of Dr. Sheldon Newman entitled “Properties of Zinc Phosphate and Glass Ionomer Orthodontic Ban Cements.”
Several talks were also given by dental and graduate students. Graduate student Christy Cortez spoke about her research mentored by Dr. Kristin Artinger, entitled “Mapping Neural Crest Progenitor Cell Domains in Zebrafish.” Third year dental student Benjamin Howard described his research under the mentorship of Dr. Jeff Stansbury entitled “Coupled Dynamics Spectroscopic Characterization of Composite Restorative Photopolymerization.” Dr. Hadley Sikes, a postdoctoral researcher from the Boulder campus presented her research obtained working in the laboratory of Dr. Christopher Bowman entitled “Photopolymerization for Signal Amplification in the Detection of Biomolecular Recognition”.
